David Rudisha: Diet

The Kenyan diet is definitely one factor for their success.

Almost everything is organic in Kenya.. Straight from the ground. Very little of the food they consume is processed.

Typically they will eat a banana before training (9:00am or 10:00am training session). This is all “breakfast” is on training days and this will be after the 6am run (Mon, Wed, Fri) and before the main workout on all days (9am or 10am start). Sometimes, instead of a banana, they’ll eat white bread.

They don’t consume any electrolytes whatsoever and don’t even consume much water during training. Most don’t bring a water bottle at all surprisingly, however they will consume plenty of water post workout/run.

For lunch and dinner, they’ll eat varieties of rice, pasta, beans, beef, chicken, spinach and other simple vegetables.

Of course, let’s not forget Ugali (google it to find out more info). Many of the athletes grow these foods themselves and catch the chickens/cows themselves and eat them.

The above is standard amongst almost all Kenyan runners. A small simple breakfast and a similar lunch and dinner, mostly vegetable based.
